Are you trying to copy a video, audio or DVD file, but for some reasons can’t do it? More likely it’s because the file is protected. Since merchants make money on selling digital data, they don’t want it to be copied for free and thus make it DRM protected. Check this article to know if you file is protected as well.
Single audio and video file protection
- Choose the media file.
- Right click it to open the “Properties” panel.
- There choose the tab “Details” and among all the categories find “Protected”. The verdict is clear – you will see “Yes” or “Not”.

- Choose the folder with media files.
- Choose the “Details” view in the right corner.
- Right click on some of head tables. Among all the criteria shown choose “Protected”.
The “Protected” column will appear. All the files will be marked as “Yes” – protected, and “No” – free for copying
DVD-protection
It is even easier with DVDs. You can understand if it is protected or not even without putting it inside your PC.
If the disk is licensed, bought in an official shop, it is protected. It goes without saying. But if you doubt, follow the next steps:
- Check the box of the disk – the bow of the licensed DVD should be qualitative, bright and firm. The disk itself should not be dirty or damaged.
- Start watching it. The menu of a protected DVD is usually colorful and professionally-made.
- Try to copy it or convert into other formats using various programs. You can use “Freemake Video Converter”. If the DVD is protected, it won’t let you do it.
Check file protection with iTunes
Some audio files cannot simply be opened on your devices like Blackberry or Droid ones. So, to enjoy the music on the way, check if they are protected or not beforehand. iTunes will help you.- Start iTunes and open the tab called “View Options”.
- Mark the “Kind” with the tick.
- In the column named “Kind” as well you will read, whether the file is protected or not.
