If you google anything, a Wikipedia article will pop up in the first row of results! It sounds incredible but for the last 11 years Wikipedia became #1 global knowledge authority. Now Wikipedia carries over 21 000 000 articles.

Even reputable encyclopaedia Britannica failed to compete with this citizen driven web prodigy and cancelled its printed edition.

Meanwhile it’s hard to call Wikipedia content – the ultimate truth. Wikipedia is a free online encyclopedia made by people and governed by several principles: anyone can create, edit or delete an article. At first sight it looks like a pure anarchy, but Wikipedia has worked out a system of checks and balances.

On the one hand, Wikipedia stands by:

• huge amount of diverse content;
• sky rocketing articles update speed;
• numerous referral links that prove almost each statement in a post;
• lots of contributors who collaborate to make the best descriptions;
• moderators who recheck information and shape article’s destiny;

On the other hand, Wikipedia opponents emphasize that:

• texts are created by ordinary people, not scientists or experts;
• an author may lack enough knowledge of a field;
• it’s possible to jungle data, add fake content and mislead Wiki readers;
• there are articles in Wikipedia that an average contributor cannot edit. For instance, I have no permission to edit pages like YouTube, Apple, Facebook, or Windows.

However, Wikipedia worked out a smooth content publishing process to avoid these issues.

A Wiki Page Writing Process: From Start to Publish

If you plan to contribute to Wikipedia, it’s advised to revise detailed Wikipedia guidelines and markup requirements. Wikipedia enables you to write articles with or without an account.

Upon the whole, any Wikipedia article should be accurate, neutral, detailed, supported by proof links, connected to other Wikipedia posts and categories. Follow these rules and leave all marketing style or spam words aside.

For example, open “freeware” post, click the “Edit” tab. After you add your ideas, other Wikipedia contributors may discuss your content and suggest changes. You can see these messages under the “Talk” tab and participate in the discussion. Finally, a moderator will check it out and decide whether to approve the article or not. Besides, a moderator may ask you for additional revisions so your post meets Wikipedia content requirements.

In addition to it, Wikipedia encourages all new writers to edit existing posts before any new article creation. You will have to hunt for a “create an article” option. This way, Wikipedia preserves its encyclopedia style and avoids spam, low quality posts, and promotional content.
